Cooperative group outcome
The outcome of the cooperative group and learning process is the racial and ethnic comparative group paper reflecting the entire work of the group. Below is a suggested outline of the information you should collect to complete the racial and ethnic comparative group paper assignment.
A. History of Country of Origin
1. Collect data on the history of country—its original inhabitants (their culture, language, religion, economic mode of production, political system etc.)
2. The demographic characteristics (population size, age, gender, economy, urban/rural, political, geography/landscape)
3. Was the country ever conquered or explored by outsiders? If so, by who and did it become a colony or a country dependent on this outside group?
4. What is the country’s military past?
5. Focus on the historical events and issues that shaped the decision for the immigrant group to leave the country of origin.
B. Reasons for Immigration
1. Push factors—what factors led (forced, propelled) the immigrant group to either voluntary or involuntary immigrate. These factors may be associated with politics, economics, military/war, religious persecution, social unrest, cultural genocide, language etc.
2. Pull factors—what factors served as incentives, economic opportunities, benefits, advantages that attracted the immigrant group to the United States. These factors may include—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, freedom, economic opportunities, political asylum, religious freedom etc.
C. Country of Destination
1. Describe the immigrant group history and current status in the United States.
2. Where are they located geographically in the United States, if they are in a city (i.e., Chicago) where are they located?
3. What positions do they hold in the economy?
4. What are the key issues facing the group?
5. How has immigration law changed since 1790? Why?
6. Did the immigrant group benefit from these changes? How? Explain?
