Break down of assignment task:
• Read assessment brief and the grading criteria as this is what your work will be marked against
• Make your choice regarding what type of cancer you will focus on and ensure you include the name of the cancer type clearly in your poster.
• Plan out your academic poster based on the following:
1. Small introduction – for example the nurses role in PH and health promotion and screening programmes (use references such as RCN document have provided for you, and also NMC and Making Every Contact Count – this will set the scene, but only needs to be brief
2. Discuss the type of cancer and what are the known causes, if any.
3. Establishing the reason for your choice which will include prevalence, and statistics (consider what part of the lifespan you are focusing on and why).
4. Demonstrate your understanding of prevention strategies for the chosen cancer type, and any screening programmes. You will find that there are only 3 screening programmes along with a significant amount of health promoting and health education programmes, but those without screening programmes will also have health promotion/education initiatives.
It is also good to include any future considerations for a screening programme, or even to state why there are no screening programmes for certain types of cancer. You may also want to include a sentence or two about Covid-19 and the impact it has had on the uptake of screening or people reporting their concerns to health professionals.
5. You need to include a section regarding application to your field of nursing (Adult, CYP, Mental Health). This is very important and therefore you need to consider this carefully. For example, if you are focusing on cervical cancer and you are working with clients in the MH arena, look at the policies and documents as well as researched literature regarding accessibility and other barriers which may prevent them from accessing screening or health promoting initiatives. This is where you need to consider one of the two health behaviour theories we covered in class, or one of your own choice.
Regarding CYP nursing you would have a different perspective regarding cervical cancer, for example the HPV programme, and as Adult nursing it would be about screening for cervical cancer and other health promotion initiatives, as well as potential barrier to screening or health promotion initiatives.
Therefore this section demonstrates your understanding of supporting people to access help/support/health education and screening by providing sound, evidenced based information to enable and empower them to make an informed choice.
6. All work needs to be supported by contemporary academic literature as well as national policy documents and guidance.
You may include a small conclusion on you poster, to sum up what you have said, such as the importance of the role of the nurse in supporting public health initiatives based on the ethos of informed choice and understanding health behaviour theories.
