Description
Write an analytical paper responding directly to your chosen prompt. Imagine for the sake of this assignment that your audience for this paper is not your professor, but someone who is interested in learning more about the fictionalized but historical film, Iron Jawed Angels. As you answer the prompt, use other required course materials to make connections and to show your course knowledge. In your introduction paragraph, briefly identify the cultural production (Iron Jawed Angels) that you will analyze, your approach (historical or cultural), and paper’s central argument or takeaway point. In your conclusion, strong essays will take the essay one step further to address why this topic is significant to U.S. culture, society, and/or history.
Essay prompt: Explain to your audience how Iron Jawed Angels reflects, erases, glosses over, celebrates, or contradicts the history of woman suffrage as focused on the 19th amendment. In doing so, use specific examples from the film and other course materials.
1” margins, a readable 10 or 12 pt font, and double-spaced.
This is not a research paper. Only use assigned course materials (video lectures, PDFs, or media viewings from Canvas assignments) for context. You can use in-line citations (Source, page # in parentheses like this) for this paper as footnotes are preferred, but not required. (If you know how to do footnotes, use them. If you don’t use in-line citation.) For this paper, if you choose to cite, simply cite images or lecture notes as: Lecture, Date. Similarly, cite a reading as: Author’s last name, page #.
This paper is too short for block quotes – all quotes should be shorter than 3 lines. Avoid grammatical or spelling mistakes. Do not use colloquial language. Limit the use of first person or passive constructions. Clear topic and concluding sentences for each paragraph go a long way to making a paper coherent.
