Questions:*
1. Assess the different ways that rulers projected their power and why they did this. You should focus on examples from at least three different civilizations or empires up to 1500 CE in different parts of the world.
2. “Women were expected to raise their children and stay within the home.” To what extent is this a true statement? You can answer this question in any time period, but use at least three examples from different parts of the world.
3. How did empires pre-1500 CE manage to control large amounts of territory? Your answer should examine at least three different empires in different parts of the world. 4. Compare and contrast European imperialism (post-1500 CE) to imperialism before 1500 CE. How are the motivations and characteristics of these empires both similar to and different from each other?
*You can choose one of these questions OR you can make up your own research question. Everyone should email me by November 8th at midnight to let me know what question you will be answering (you can email me as soon as you decide).
Requirements: • Your essay is due November 22 by 11:59pm. • It should be between 1500-2000 words. • Source requirements: o You should use at least 3 primary sources and at least 5 secondary sources in your paper.
o Your 5 secondary sources must be scholarly articles or books/book chapters. Websites (.org and .edu) and the textbook can be used in your paper, but will not count toward the 5 sources.
o You can find articles and book chapters by searching on JSTOR and through the college library. If you have questions about how to access sources, please ask me.
• Make sure you cite your sources using the Chicago Style Guide, available here: https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-1.html. You should use footnotes or endnotes. • You should type your paper in a legible font (Arial, Times New Roman, etc.), size 12- point, at least 1.5 spaced.
