Energy balance is the very foundation of weight regulation. To maintain a given weight, energy intake must equal energy output. If excess calories are consumed or if energy expenditure is minimized, a weight gain will result. Alternatively, a reduction in calorie consumption or increase in energy expenditure results in a loss of body weight. Yet for all the simplicity, an obesity epidemic has swept the nation as many Americans struggle in their attempts to lose weight.
