Paper details:
Answer the 7 guided reading questions and choose any 2 of the open-ended questions to respond :
1. Based on your reading of the chapter, what are some things an algorithm or model would need to ensure in order to not cause harm. Answer in terms of the three components of a WMD O’Neil lists (opacity, scale, damage).
2. Reflect on where you have seen models in your own life. How did they impact you or those around you? Feel free to discuss informal or formal models here.
3. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how to combat the issue of blind spots embedded into models, as described by O’Neil? With one of the harmful examples provided in the chapter in mind, if you had the power, what would you change?
4. How convincing are the examples and arguments the author used in this chapter? Some questions to consider as you form your answer:
a. Do the claims and conclusions follow from the evidence? Are the assumptions realistic?
b. Are there different examples that would be more convincing?
c . Are there other perspectives the authors should have considered?
