Imagine you are a consultant to the organization known as Axon () and you have just completed the research and interviews necessary to guide the organization through its change process in order to implement 5S Lean methodology. Think of this as roughly what Burke calls the “launch phase.” Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to the Board (or an equivalent group of senior executives) where you provide them with your recommendations for moving forward to implement 5S Lean methodology for Axon.
***PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS:***
1. Briefly recap to your audience why the organization had embarked on the change initiative to implement 5S.
2. Provide the background for your recommendations by describing:
a. the model,
b. the theoretical and
c. the conceptual issues associated with the change.
3. Describe your specific recommendations and the reason(s) why they are necessary. You may include examples of specific activities here as well. Include among the recommendations and/or activities how you will deal with resistance to change.
4. Include changes that are related to COVID-19. These can be safety issues, e.g., social distancing, masking, air ventilation, or vaccine policies. Or these can be temporary changes necessitated in 2020 by COVID-19, to become permanent features of the institution, e.g., hybrid activities, or allowing some people to work/participate from home a certain amount of time.
You could mention specific changes, or you could talk about a process or guideline that will be adapted as more and more people get vaccinated, or as case numbers in the community rise and fall. Please note a technical issue regarding vaccinations. In the USA COVID-19 vaccinations cannot be made a condition of employment or participation, because none of the COVID-19 vaccines yet have full formal FDA approval. They have emergency authorization. (Only vaccines that have full FDA approval can be mandated). Pfizer will probably get full approval this month. This could potentially make the issue of mandating a COVID-19 vaccine more complicated, as strictly only Pfizer may be mandated. * If you want to recommend vaccination of people in the organization under discussion, you will need to think of incentives rather than mandates.
***HANDOUT REQUIREMENTS:***
1. Compose a separate handout that will serve as the narrative/script accompanying your slide presentation.
2. This handout is not a paper or an essay, but it needs to be written in a professional and polished style.
3. It will be given to people who were not at your presentation.
4. Divide this handout into subsections, each subsection corresponding to one slide.
5. Each subsection will explain verbally what is presented on a slide. You may have a slide with just a picture, or just a graph, or just a map, but you may need to spend ten minutes or so of your presentation discussing what is on your slide. This handout is where you will verbally make the points that are presented to your audience visually on the screen in front of them.
6. Use APA format for citations in this handout. Anybody you cite or paraphrase in your handout, needs to be included as a source in your reference page. Your reference page must only include the sources you cited or paraphrased in your handout/presentation.
MISC. FORMAT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Absolutely do not use clipart.
2. Do not use your organization logo on each slide. It just takes up space.
3. Pay attention to the “tips” in the two articles (Module 7 Links) about slide presentations.
4. Choose a layout theme that allows you the largest possible “canvas” for your presentation. Avoid space-hoarding and distracting backgrounds.
