Is differentiating between multiculturalist and assimilationalist models the best way of characterising the different contemporary approaches of European states to immigration policy?

In this essay you must answer with respect to two or more countries – three or more if one of your countries is the UK. Some people prefer to do broad, synoptic pieces, pulling in a larger range of countries. Others prefer to do more narrowly-focused pieces, drawing on no more than two or three examples. Either approach is equally acceptable.

To do well on the essay we are looking for answers that sustain and develop an argument which is backed up by evidence and illustration from the cases used and that show an engagement with the academic research on the chosen topic. This is a difficult task with the limits of a 2000 word essay because we are asking you to use concepts and evidence, make an argument and utilise evidence from a number of cases within a short space. This means that it is important that you plan your essay and that you plan the work that you will need to do in advance to identify source material that allows you to deal with cases.
