Description
This is a first draft of your literature review. The general research process begins with a topic, but you cannot jump right into a research project, even if it is an important topic, because you need to review what has already been researched. If you do not review previously completed studies, you could risk replicating a previous study or you may not utilize evidence-based practice (you might use outdated information in your study). In this section, which will be the second part of your final research proposal, you will want to focus specifically upon the information/studies that are relevant to your research question. You will synthesize this information to give the reader a better understanding about what has been conducted which, in turn, has led to your study. For example, my dissertation focused upon a walking intervention attempting to decrease perceived stress for university employees. My literature review had the following sections: Stress in higher education, sources of stress in higher education, health and economic effects of stress, stress remediation via walking intervention, health benefits of physical activity, walking interventions, and walking interventions in higher education. Each section cited numerous research articles to provide a better understanding of research that has already been done, how and why my study was created, and how my study will add to the research base of the field. Yours will not be as in depth as this, but you will want to provide the reader with an understanding about why you are proposing your particular study based on previous research.
For this course, you should plan to discuss two or three themes. You have the example of Dr. Fischer’s dissertation and the topics presented. Another example is having childhood obesity as the overall topic (my study will focus on a family physical activity intervention). The themes I would include in my literature review would be previous studies on family interventions to reduce weight (not individuals, but families) and physical activity interventions (not nutrition). You will then find resources related to those themes and discuss them.
You are encouraged to use headings and subheadings per APA guidelines to help organized your paper.
