Assignment: Chapter 15 Case Study: Mental Health
Case Study: Mary is currently a resident at a mental health facility that provides services for clients with suicidal tendencies. She is working alongside a psychologist who seeks to identify the motive behind Mary’s multiple attempts at suicide. She has had four sessions with Mary personally to understand the conflicts in her mind. The staff and other inmates at the facility have had minimal or no interaction with Mary and have not been able to provide adequate information about her. Mary has not had any visitors and the only available information is from her case file provided by the facility during intake.
1. The above hypothetical narrative could be understood as a case study, a life history of Mary or from a feminist perspective. Which method would you identify as most appropriate and why?
2. The restricted availability of information reiterates the importance of recording observations while interviewing the client. Discuss the various methods that would enable better collection and availability of data while interviewing the client.
3. Discuss the potential threat of bias in the hypothetical situation mentioned in Question 1.
