2. TOPICAL Overview/Intro Paragraph – identify the topic, importance, and state some key facts (cite sources)
3. Search Strategy Paragraph: List SPECIFIC databases and best search terms; identify your disciplinary or theoretical perspective for this scholarly content.
4. Your choice so far of 10 REFERENCE CITATIONS (in APA format).
5. Each REFERENCE is followed by your ANNOTATION – your notes on that source (bulk of this assignment).
6. Cite the source in FIRST sentence of each annotation (See samples, and APA Chapter 6).
7. THREE of the 10 should be “KEY reviews” meaning longer – see my instructions for 3 paragraph formula for Key Sources.
8. Your annotations should identify important and relevant aspects of the publication including the article ‘type’, and if is a study, what type, meaning what method? Discuss important results, relevant conclusions.
General NOTES for Step 4:
This assignment is progressive from earlier steps and rather than simply “writing a lit review”, this is a preliminary sequential review of the literature and prepares your “rough draft” for the REVIEW of Literature section in Step 5, The Proposal. By this point, you should have MORE THAN 10 SCHOLARLY SOURCES, but for Step 4, use your “Top 10”, read all of them more than once and select the most relevant information from them for these purposes. Remember, the main PURPOSE of lit search and literature review is to become knowledgeable about your topic of choice to prepare your for a PROJECT. This is a record of your thinking about each source to bring me up to speed on your work so far.
Topical coverage with these 10 (or more) should be broad, but also focused on your key concepts; also make sure some use the kind of method you might use, and study your population of interest preferably some using qualitative methodology. You might even want to re-search the lit (your favorite databases & terms) adding the term “qualitative method”, or even more specific such as “narrative study” or “case study” as they may be more illustrative than statistics from large scale quantitative studies. Also, did you find any theoretical perspective or specific theories to guide your overall inquiry? Part of how we make this an HDEV project is to identify our disciplinary perspective and ideally we make sure to include multiple perspectives including diversity of development whenever possible. Even if these 10 don’t cover all of this, make sure your overall Step 5 content does.
