In Unit 1, you learned about the various assumptions of law (four assumptions), along with the various functions and dysfunctions of law. In Unit 2, you learned that there are many different definitions of law. How you define “law” can have a significant impact on your assessment of a legal system.

In a well-written informative essay of roughly 4 pages (900–1,000 words), provide an evaluation of the U.S. legal system today. In your essay you must: (1) incorporate at least two of the four major assumptions of law; (2) describe at least two functions and two dysfunctions of law; and (3) incorporate at least two different definitions of law. Your assessment should explain how each of the selected topics relate to one another: show the connections between your definitions, assumptions, functions, and dysfunctions of the legal system and how these guide the behavior of members of society.

Note: This project will require outside research. You will use the chapter reading and at least two outside authoritative sources to help support your analysis. You may consult the Library, the internet, the textbook, other course material, and any other outside resources in supporting your task, using proper citations in either Bluebook or APA style. In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the assignment, a successful paper must also meet the following criteria:

Paper should include a title page and reference page and be in 10- or 12-point font. (Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman are acceptable.)
Viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained.
Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.).
