The term glass ceiling is a metaphor that was coined by feminists to represent an invisible barrier that keeps women from rising to the top of the economic hierarchy. If we apply this metaphor to the Middle Ages, what events or evidence from the period would you identify as comprising a “stained-glass ceiling” for women? What cultural or religious factors may have informed this? How do your examples compare to the status and treatment of women from other cultures or periods? Do some of the same barriers exist today or not?
To formulate an excellent answer, you will not just refer to one source but to several. For example, you could refer to the readings about these artifacts, but you might want to review the overviews of the Carolingian, Romanesque, and Gothic periods and check the exploration materials for other resources.
