Paper instructions: There is a 300-word cap on this part( must bee 300 or less words); references and question do not count toward this word limit. Posts that demonstrate quality, clarity, depth, focus will be more positively evaluated than posts that are shy on these key elements.
Student contributions to the Journal Club must explicitly focus on the material within the assigned original research article (Riaz et al. for Unit 14).
You are expected to carefully read & critically evaluate the published research, and your posts must reflect this effort. Input should focus in detail on: the figures/data; experimental design; use of controls; conclusions made by the authors.
As the articel mentioned, Vismodegib (Erivedge) is a drug that is a hedgehog pathway inhibitor and is being used to treat adults with metastatic basal cell carcinoma (Riaz, Ke, Wang, & Kayan, 2019). In basal cell carcinoma, tumors contain mutations that are either inactivate Patched which allows for the hedgehog pathway to be turned on, or active SMO which turns on the hedgehog pathway inappropriately. This drug blocks the activation of the hedgehog pathway by binding to SMO (Wilkes, 2012). Besides cancer, what other diseases does the hedgehog pathway contribute to?
