Discussion Prompt: Just before reaching the time when the bet would have ended, and the lawyer would have won the reward, he decides to forfeit the bet. Why does he do this? Has he gained anything from forfeiting the bet? What do you think Chekov is going after here? Is he taking a position on the issue.
