Introduction
This module examines the problems and possibilities of governing issues and processes in global politics. It addresses the question of governance in a globalising world through an examination of the roles played by international organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and global civil society, and ‘club’ actors such as the G20 in shaping contemporary international order. In addition we look at the so-called ‘rising powers’ and how they are seeking to integrate – and potentially transform – global order.
In the process, the module addresses both historical and contemporary processes and practices in the governance of globalisation, addressing not just issues of efficiency and effectiveness but also of legitimacy and accountability. By the end of the module students should have a solid grounding in some of the key processes and actors involved in governing globalisation.
Module Learning Outcomes (By the end of the module, you will be able to:)
• Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the significance and operation of key organisations at a global level.
• Demonstrate an ability to critically analyse the significance of regimes and to apply general knowledge to specific case studies.
• Deliver confident and well researched weekly contributions to a discussion board and make informed comments on the contributions of fellow students.
• Produce well researched and developed pieces of work in an appropriate academic style.
