Book from Week 5:

Reading Activity for Lower Elementary Classroom

Secret Sisters of the Salty Sea

This is a short story for the lower elementary classroom. It talks about two sisters who take

their first vacation on the beach, about embracing new experiences and working through

conflict (Lynne Rae Perkins, 2019). One of them gets to work with a falcon and then releases it

into the wild (Lynne Rae Perkins, 2019).

Pre-reading Activities

Pre-reading activities may help pupils to prepare for what they are about to read, they may as

well prepare for the kind of grammar, vocabulary, and even language used in a specific text. If

this activity is done in the right way possible, learners may be motivated to read. However, in

the story above the learners’ pre-reading activities include Pictionary, where they may be put

into two groups, and a learner from each group is asked to come to the chalkboard and draw

pictures of the bird and the rest are asked to identify the kind of bird drawn. Learners may as

well be given pictures and asked to guess what the story will be about, and each group is

allowed to present their ideas. They may also come with crayons to class and color the picture

as expected.

Reading Activities

To make learners more excited in reading this story, it’s very important to help them memorize

words, and this is the best starting point since children learn to read differently, and therefore

keeping them occupied in learning is the best option and should be put into practice in lower

elementary classrooms. They can as well associate the words they read with various objects

they see in the pictures drawn in the story to be read. This can be achieved by displaying

various letters and words around the class to encourage them to ask questions for more

understanding.

Post-reading Activities

Post-reading activity that may be done to learners in this academic level is by giving them

charts to assist in concept visualization to come out with a greater relationship between ideas

from what they have read
