Words: 461
Pages: 2
Subject: Nursing

Description

State your PICOT question.

• Indicate in parentheses after each segment, what part of PICOT the preceding words represent.

• For example: In patients recently discharged from the hospital following care for heart failure (P), do hand-off calls by the nurse to the primary care provider using the SBAR format (situation, background, assessment, recommendation) (I) compared to no calls (C) decrease readmission rates (O) over a one year period (T).

• Provide feedback to your classmates that focuses on:

• The use of correct PICOT format for the question to guide the literature search.

• Does the question reflect a clinical issue and one appropriate for an evidence-based practice project?

• Can this project be complete in a primary care setting if the student is in an NP program.

• Can this project be complete in a setting appropriate to the students focus–NE, NA, NI?

• Does the student need to include time or a comparison group to get the answer to their question?

o Note: many times the population chosen can serve as their own controls.

Capstone Project on Opioid Substance Abuse Treatment. I am currently completing my clinical rotation in a clinic that offers medication- assisted treatment (MAT). Addiction is a subject that has always tugged at my heart and I have wanted to explore more. I have gained more knowlege in the combination of medication, behavioral therapys and conseling to treat this horrific disease.

Over the past decade, pain killers have been produced in large quantities. However, this led to the widespread misuse of prescribed and non-prescribed opioids, creating high addictions in the United States. As a result, the United States health sciences department declared opioid s drug abuse a national health emergency.

Background Questions

Some of the background questions include:

Who are the people most affected by opioid substance abuse and without adequate access to the abuse’s medication treatment?

What are the causes of opioids, drug abuse disorders, or addiction, and the causes of low access for medication treatment of this substance abuse?

Where are the most prevalent abuse and the facilities with the minor medication treatment for addiction to opioids?

When has opioids addiction become an epidemic, and how to diagnose it?

How has this disorder impacted patients’ life and why is there a need for more medication treatment facilities?

Strategy of Finding Answers to Background Questions

Observation of medical records for patients diagnosed with opioids abuse will answer the leading causes of this addiction and the level of access to this treatment. The DSM-5 criteria indicate how to diagnose(American Psychiatric Association, 2013) the levels of addiction of substance abuse. Besides, it is critical to use scholarly data bases such as Google Scholar, ProQuest or PubMed to retrieve relevant research studies on the issue that would help define the research gap.
