An active discussion is the key to an interesting and engaging online course. Discussion in this course is designed to simulate a classroom discussion. As others join in the discussion, you should read what has already been posted and add substantively to the discussion.
The modules in this course are one week. Time goes quickly, so post early! Get in the habit of checking the discussions as often as you can to see what others have posted and to respond. Waiting until the last day to post means you miss learning from your peers, and they miss out on learning from you.
Please think about each of the following questions and respond not only to the question but also to what others are saying. The first question is opinion-based so that you can begin the discussion immediately without having completed all your readings.
As you progress, you will need to meaningfully apply the readings. You will need to credit your sources; however, APA formatting is only required for non-course assigned readings or videos.
Let’s start with a reflective question based on your experiences, any prior learning, and/or opinion. You don’t need to read before discussing this first question.
One of the most popular fitness mantras out there is the well-known: No Pain, No Gain! What does this phrase mean to you? To what extent do you think people need to feel pain to believe they are reaching their fitness goals? In other words, do you think that this is a myth, or is there some truth to it? How so?
What is one myth about exercise that stood out to you from your readings? Why do you think that certain people fall victim to this myth? If someone said to you that they believe in this myth, what would you say to challenge that belief (and not the person!)?
Your readings discuss some of the barriers to exercise. If a local reporter asked you to name the top three barriers that discourage people from adopting a healthy lifestyle, which ones would you choose and why? Be sure to support your choices with the readings and state whether these are personal or environmental barriers. As you read one another’s barriers, build on what your classmates are sharing in the discussion. For example, if someone has already said money is an issue, acknowledge your classmate’s work and add to it meaningfully.
Looking at the list of barriers you and your classmates have compiled, please choose one barrier and provide one recommendation on what can be done to remove this barrier. Your recommendation must be strongly supported by the readings; opinion will not suffice. Try to choose a barrier that has not yet been addressed so that, together, you are building solutions to problems that you can take with you beyond this course.
MO1: Examine barriers to fitness using a cross-cultural lens. (CO2)
MO2: Identify common health and fitness myths, trendcgos, and commonly targeted audiences. (CO6)
