In Week 2, you began to construct a three-generational genogram of your family of origin. As you construct the genogram, include information you feel comfortable sharing with your instructor. If there is information you do not wish to include, that is okay. If you were adopted, you can find out how to complete your genogram by referring to Chapter 5, “Children Growing Up in Multiple Families: Foster Care, Adoption, and Orphanage Experiences,” in the McGoldrick, Gerson, and Petry text.
Your assignment is composed of two parts:
1) Genogram.
2) Analysis paper.
Genogram
Make sure to include the following in your genogram:
.The delineation of family relationships (close, overly close, conflictual, or cut off)
.Information such as chronic or terminal illnesses, ethnic backgrounds, alcoholism, suicides, mental health issues, diversity and social cultural factors,
.Information relevant to describe the family system, particularly information that helps the viewer better understand some of the prominent relationship delineations and dynamics in the family.
Analysis Paper
Complete the following in your analysis paper:
Family systems analysis identifies patterns and roles in how the family relates. Analyze your three-generational family genogram for inter generational themes, relationship patterns, and life-cycle transitions. Ask yourself questions such as:
What are some emerging family patterns?
How have these patterns made me who I am, and what are my roles in my system?
How have these patterns and roles influenced my life?
What are significant cultural issues to consider?
What strengths are you proud of that have been passed along?
How does or how will your understanding of yourself from your genogram influence your work as a family therapist?
Writing Style
As this is a personal exploration of your family, it is preferred that you write in first-person about your perspective and experiences in the family. This personal exploration, however, is still occurring in the context of a genogram instrument that has been designed and refined by others. It is also an academic exercise. For these reasons, your document should adhere to current APA style and formatting, with the exception of the noted first-person allowance. As with any proper academic writing, you should establish a premise (cite and reference) for the use of the genogram before launching into your personal exploration. You should also be attempting to connect the various dynamics illustrated and discussed in your genogram and analysis paper to the various life-cycle concepts in the course literature.
