Instructions

Choose a setting for nursing practice you wish to evaluate supplies for (for example, school nurse, pediatric floor, home health care, long term care, etc.).

Evaluate the nursing cares performed and determine 5 disposable supplies that must be re-ordered for each patient upon use. For example, if my area of nursing care is school nursing I may have to re-order gauze pads for wounds. List those 5 supplies that you will need to re-order on an ongoing basis.

Determine the number of each supply that you will order annually. You might have to consider how much you might use per month to determine an annual supply order.

Look to the Internet to find the cost of each item. Can you get a better price if you buy in volume?

Determine the amount of shipping that you will have to pay. The shipping costs will be directly related to the amount of orders you have to place as well so will it be better to buy in bulk or does the product need to be purchased each month due to expiration dates?

Open an Excel spreadsheet workbook.
Title your budget by the name of your practice setting.
List the five supplies.
List the total amount of each supply you would order for a year.
List the cost of each individual item. (If you buy in bulk divide the items into the overall cost to determine the individual item cost).
List the shipping costs based on an annual ordering. (Add up any individual costs and come up with the total for the year)
State the total cost of purchasing that product over year.
What is the budget you will need to ask for when you go to the budget meeting this year for those 5 items.
File must be submittcgoed as an Excel spreadsheet.
