Purpose
Your research paper is expected to:
balance knowledge of the subject derived from scientific literature
demonstrate an understanding of the latest research in the field in summary form
critique the controversies that exist (where applicable), and critique the fundamental conclusions
offer personal views on the topic, backed-up by your literature survey and analysis
point out questions from the research that await further study
Structure
Your paper should have a predetermined structure. You must decide beforehand whether to arrange your paper logically, chronologically, or according to some other sequential scheme. The easiest way to decide on an arrangement for your paper is to prepare an outline. While preparing an outline takes time in the beginning, it will save you valuable time (and energy) when writing the paper.
The body of the paper should be 10-16 pages (approximately 3,000 to 4,000 words, excluding title page and reference pages), double-spaced, using standard Times New Roman 12-point font, and 1-inch margins all around. The paper must adhere to APA style (7th ed.). Also refer to the Sample Research Paper on the course homepage.
References/Sources
Use a minimum of 10 primary research articles (see Marking Guidelines for the PSYC 395 Research Paper), cited and referenced using APA style (7th ed.). Refer also to the Sample Research Paper on the course homepage.
You must use peer-reviewed journal articles for this assignment. Do NOT choose information from consumer or public education websites (e.g., fact sheets, Wikipedia, etc.), as these are known as tertiary sources (see APA tutorial). The articles from these sites may not be research-based or peer-reviewed, and are not considered reliable academic sources. Using such materials will seriously affect your grade. Follow your tutor’s guidelines on selecting appropriate, valid, and reliable materials.
The eText or print textbook can be used as an additional reference but only for very minimal citations. The textbook uses APA style formatting when listing references and citations—the one exception is the text does not list the ‘doi’ in the reference section for journal articles; however, you are required to include this in your paper (see APA tutorial). A sample paper is also available on the course website for your perusal.
