You are an Employment Law Consultant who has been asked to provide a 2,000 word research report to a Local Employers Forum. (a) They want to know how they can close the gender pay gap within their organisation. Many of their employers have very few women at the top of their company with most being employed at the lowest pay points.

As a minimum the report should include:

– information about the UK legal definition of equal pay particularly work of equal value and the problems with women’s pay and progression in the workplace.

-You should consider what other employers are doing and how successful this is and what they can do, based on the research, to close the gap

Whilst you should give the relevant legislation you will need to explain it for educated lay people. You should not simply copy and paste guidance or advice but you will need to explain and apply it to your client group. You will also need to consider the effectiveness of any proposed reforms or of actions taken or proposed.

Your work will therefore be largely analytical with some practical advice. It must be underpinned by the law and research and evidence which you will need to reference fully in the usual way.

You will need to write this in a report format with a contents page and headings. You need to make it easy for the audience to find the information that they need at any time.

Please tailor your language to your audience; avoid using legal jargon and make sure that you explain and analyse the law and research.

Outcomes that are being assessed:

(a) Provide appropriately reasoned and structured advice on employment law topics

(b) Select and apply a range of relevant primary and secondary source material to support the provision of advice

(c) Successfully select and apply concepts, principles and knowledge to devise, sustain and structure an argument in relation to employment law

(d) Effectively analyse, synthesise and critically evaluate a wide range of resources including current research, academic publications and relevant and appropriate primary and secondary sources to support an argument

(e) Coherently integrate reference to the operation of employment law in the wider social, political and economic context

(f) Convey complex information clearly and concisely to a professional standard in good quality English using relevant terminology and accurate referencing
