ASSIGNMENT II – REGISTERED NURSE (RN) INTERVIEW
Communication is more than just the sharing or exchanging of ideas and information. It is a dynamic interchange between communicators. It includes both verbal and nonverbal interactions and is an essential component of nursing practice.
There are three (3) parts to this assignment:
Interview a registered nurse (RN) with two years or more experience currently in
practice regarding their perception of nursing and the nurse’s “role.” Turn in a two-
to-three-page typed summary of this interview. The paper must be typed in a summarized APA format. Do not numerically itemize the questions in your paper.
10 points will be deducted from the total score of paper where the questions were numerically itemized. However, all interview questions below must be summarized in your paper.
I. Start your paper with a brief introduction of the RN interviewee – to include years of experience and current area of practice.
NOTE: use the nurse interviewee’s initials or last name only.
II. Questions: (summarize the questions in order in your paper). Do not numerically itemize the questions in your paper.
1. What is your perception of the role of the Registered Nurse?
2. Has that perception changed since you first entered Nursing?
3. In what area(s) of nursing have you worked?
4. Did you feel you needed different types of communication for each specialty
area? If so, how did your communication differ?
5. With whom do you communicate most frequently?
6. How important do you believe communication is in a nurse/patient relationship?
7. Are there insights or tips you can give me that you have discovered enhance communication with patients or others?
III. In one or more paragraphs discuss how you felt interviewing the RN. How effective are your communication skills? Are you comfortable about the way you communicate?
Describe at least three non-verbal cues that you observed the interviewee using. What did these non-verbal cues mean to you as the observer?
