Storytelling: Boarders & Borderlines
Option 1 (Creative, Personal Narrative: Write a chapter of your or your family’s immigration story (1-2 pages). Then, write an additional paragraph imagining how you would adapt your story to the screen. What kind of movie would it be? How would you construct the narrative? What visual techniques might you use?
Option 2 (Research, Writing): Research the current crisis at the Southern border, U.S. immigration policy, ban on travel (the so-called “Muslim ban”) and/or closed borders. Write 1-2 pages about what you learned (cite your sources!) Then, pull out one story from your research, imagine someone’s experience; write an additional paragraph imagining how you would adapt this story to the screen. What kind of movie would it be? How would you construct the narrative? What visual techniques might you use?
