Essay Details
1) Describe ONE event in the last years five years or so which highlights the group’s interaction with the political process.
2) Such an interaction could highlight the group’s relationship to a particular politician, a political party, and/or a specific piece of legislation in Congress.
3) Provide a commentary of the event which includes BOTH your view of the issues as well as an assessment of the positives and negatives of the overall involvement of the organization in the political process.
Audience
Your intended audience is your fellow students.
Purpose
You will demonstrate the ability to research, revise, and properly cite/reference the material you used. You will choose an interest group, focus on recent event, comment on the subject matter and lastly evaluate the methods used by the interest to gain influence in the public policy process.
Process
You will find an event in the last five years or so that involved the group. The event could be supporting/blocking a policy in Congress, supporting a candidate for public office, supporting an elected politician in some way, etc. Other than the internet at large, SLCC library is a great resource. You will organize your essay according to the assignment description above (describe the group, describe the “event”, provide your views on the group as well as the related issue/s and, finally, comment on the positives and negatives of the overall involvement of the organization in the political process.
