Expressing Prognosis
This week, you have learned about the natural history of disease as expressed by EPI curves. But while working with figures is integral to making key decisions, it is far from being in the position of making difficult choices. In this activity, you will be tasked with making determinations from the point of view of the epidemiologist on the ground.
In the Solve the Outbreak activity on the following link: https://www.cdc.gov/mobile/applications/sto/web-app.html
Choose Level 1 to start. Begin going through the various scenarios, completing at least one of them and then working your scoring badge to achieve at least 5,000 points.
Afterwards, take a screenshot of your gaming badge with at least 5,000 points and submit it using the guidelines below along with the following:
1. Provide a brief overview of one of the scenarios you played through.
2. Describe which of the five ways you would select to describe prognosis in this scenario and why (case-fatality, five-year survival, observed survival, median survival time, or relative survival).
3. Would you suggest a life-table approach or the Kaplan-Meier method for calculating observed survival over time? Why?
