Medical Waste disposal in Developing Countries: example of Healthcare in Al Madinah Province, Saudi Arabia

Aim of this Study:

Assess the quantity and quality of hospital waste in Al Madinah Province, thus providing an insight into the current state and future potential for hospital waste generation to improvement medical waste management

The objectives of the study will be:

1- To quantify the amount of medical waste generated by 15 hospitals and Health care facilities in Al Madinah Province during the three-year period between 2019 and 2021.
2- To identify the current medical waste handling practices in Saudi Gulf Company for Environmental Protection (SEPCO), including storage, collection, transportation, treatment and disposal.
3- To improve the medical waste management in hospitals and health care facilities in Al Madinah Province by distributing a questionnaire among health care workers to determine knowledge, opinions and practices.

Research Methodology:

1)Database Analysis
The waste data collected will be organized from Saudi Gulf Company for Environmental Protection (SEPCO) using Microsoft Office Excel, and the amounts of waste generated each year will be calculated for 2019, 2020 and 2021.
2) Questionnaire Analysis
a cross-sectional study using a quantitative questionnaire and random sampling procedure will be used to select 50 healthcare workers from a total of 15 hospitals in the Al Madinah.
