What is Searle’s Chinese Room Thought Experiment? Why, in Searle’s view, is it a mistake to equate computation with conscious thought?

Reflection on: What is Searle’s Chinese Room Thought Experiment? Why, in Searle’s view, is it a mistake to equate computation with conscious thought?

Description

This reflection is based on : Searle, John. (1997). Consciousness as a Biological Problem. In The Mystery of Consciousness (New York: New York Review of Books), pp. 3-18.

The reflection has to include:

1) Evidence that you have read the assigned reading and that you are thinking about the ideas it contains

2) An attempt to relate the reading to your experience

3) A question that can serve as the basis for group or class discussion. Avoid simply summarizing the ideas since everyone has already done the readings! Please see further instructions in attached material as well as a sample student reflection and course notes.
