• Demonstrate a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of a framework of clinical governance and legal and professional frameworks.

• Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of other professionals and agencies to enhance safe practice and effective care, safeguard vulnerable individuals and challenge practice where appropriate!

• Includes the student’s completed electronic literature search as an appendix.

2000 word written commentary on leading and managing a caseload in this commentary students will critically analyse and explore the theories of nursing leadership and caseload management in mental health nursing. Male acute ward.

• How have you managed caseload and what skills have you used
• Avoid looking at each criteria as separate sections of work they should all merge and flow.

• You may wish to focus on one situation such as an emergency, crisis situation or a high dependency situation might be. You could focus on something unexpected, for example an emergency admission requiring you to reprioritise or bed shortages etc due to the limited word count.

• Very brief overview of caseload
• Think about skills required, how you delegated (did they have correct skills and how did you ascertain this)

• Patient may prefer male – documented in care plan and the male staff may be needed elsewhere so you prioritise – what skills helped you prioritise and why is this important

• Time management – what requires being completed due to time restraints. Prioritising tasks and also keeping people updated about the plan of the day.

• Keeping service users informed as to if their needs are going to be met – are the resources available to take them on leave – what can we put in place instead.
• How is giving and receiving handovers leadership and management?
• Why has the caseload been managed in this way – episode of violence and aggression eg

• Think about the discharge of patients, who did you need to contact.

• This may include demonstration of adhering to professional guidelines and protocols such as NICE, NMC, RCN, DH, NHS. It could also include reference to local trust guidelines.

• Clinical governance includes safe and best practice that involves audit, handling of complaint.

• Think about other professionals/disciplines you worked with and what was their role? Eg. Escalating concerns to practice assessors

• What skills did you use – record keeping, providing safe and clear handover from staff and other departments?

• Think about discharge of patients, who did you need to contact.
